Acas employment relations update

Dear Desleigh,

The law relating to GP provided sick notes is due to change in April 2010.

The current sick note asks GPs to make a decision as to whether their patient should or should not work and for how long they should not work. The revised fit note will allow them to indicate that an individual may be fit for some work if the workplace and/or duties can be temporarily amended.

To help you understand the implications of the changes Acas will be delivering short training events that will explain what the new statement of fitness to work will mean for you, your employees and your organisation.

See below for details of the events and the 60 second update, for more on health and the workplace.

Kind regards

Colin Williamson

60 Second Update

Work is good for you !

Work can have a positive impact on our health and wellbeing. Healthy and well motivated employees can have an equally positive impact on the productivity and effectiveness of a business.

Responsibility for health and wellbeing at work belongs to both employers and employees. The key factors that can determine whether workers will have a positive or negative relationship with work are:

• the relationships between line managers and employees
• whether employees are involved in organisational issues and decisions
• job design
• availability and acceptability of flexible working
• awareness of occupational health issues
